Planning

Did know that the London Borough of Islington [LBI] has more historic houses protected by law than any other London Borough?

That’s because Islington was built up in the late 18th and early 19th century when Kings George III and IV were on the throne.

Almost all the houses and blocks of flats in the Amwell area are Grade II Listed and are protected from alteration or modification without planning permission gained in advance from LBI. Bevin Court and Charles Rowan House, although built much later are included because they are unique.

Grade II Listed means buildings that are of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them.

New River Conservation Area

The Amwell area is covered by the New River Conservation Area which gives a framework for regulations relating to listed buildings. The Amwell Society keeps an eye on planning applications and proposals so that any scheme or change to a house, vacant site, commercial or office premises are monitored. The Amwell area maintains its look and feel because of the Conservation Area rules and the eagle-eye of the Society.
